Mikkola Superfan - Theo Adriaenssens (Belgium)

I don’t recall the exact moment, but at the time I noticed Heikki Mikkola for the first time, early ’70’s, I was immediately convinced. I often think back at great sport-moments of my idol. Heikki was an athlete with an extreme dose of character, a clear determination and a great physical condition.
At the begin of his carreer, it did’nt went very easy for him. He had to fight the best racers in the world like Joël Robert, Sylvain Geboers and Roger DeCoster in foreign countrys, often far away from his homeland Finland. And let’s be real: Husqvarna did not treated Heikki with the same conditions as his collegue-HVA racers from Sweden.

 

Imagine this: I was called such a great fan of Heikki Mikkola, I even called my son, born in 1973, Heikki by his first name… While doing my service at the Belgian Army, I happened te met Luc, also a Mikkola-fanatic. We shared our passion for the racer and his adventures and became real good friends. Together we travelled many times towards races. Even today our friendschip remains, the news somebody developped a site about Heikki Mikkola was a revelation for the both of us.
The day we got the news of Heikki’s retirement (late 1979), was a sad day. Motocross would never be the same for us. Some years later we showed some interest for another very talented Fin, Pekka Vehkonen.
Nowadays it must be about 20 years ago since we visited a race.
